Epiphany Lutheran Church is located on Chautauqua Street, just west of Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Illinois. Core to our belief is that each of us is made right with God through the love, grace, and forgiveness given by God through the crucified and resurrected Son of God, Jesus Christ. We are met by God in two sacraments; Holy Baptism and the Holy Communion. While we cannot earn God’s love (it is a gift), we are equipped, empowered, and commissioned to love our neighbors, using our time, talent, and treasure. Denominationally, we are a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Epiphany is united with churches near and far in the denomination, but partners in ministry with other congregations within the Central/Southern Illinois Synod.
Within our religiously diverse community, Epiphany Lutheran Church is active in the Carbondale Interfaith Council. God’s Holy Spirit works in, around, and through us for the sake of the world. Our partnership is not limited only to those who have similar theology, rituals, and beliefs. The Holy Spirit works to unite us within the body of Christ, and to work in the world with people with a diversity of religious practices and beliefs, for the sake of God and the sake of our neighbor.
As a part of the Carbondale community, Epiphany Lutheran Church is also a part of the Campus Ministry Association at Southern Illinois University. We continue to strive to be good neighbors, extending the love and care of Christ to neighbors near and far. We are well connected to the university, and campus ministry is an important part of our evangelism (“sharing the good news”) commitment.

Pastor Paul Waterman
In June of 2016, Epiphany Lutheran Church called Paul Waterman to serve in the office of Pastor. As a graduate of Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, Pastor Paul moved to Carbondale and began ordained ministry at Epiphany Lutheran Church on August 1, 2016.
Pastor Paul is a lifelong Lutheran. He grew up in Northeast Iowa and attended church fifty-one Sundays each year. Pastor Paul fondly remembers sitting with his best friend, Kurt, in youth Sunday School, waiting to be called upon to request the song, “Father Abraham.” Pastor Paul made it through confirmation and became more involved in high school. One transformative experience was attending the ELCA National Youth Gathering in St. Louis, Missouri, in the summer of 2000. During his youth, Pastor Paul also taught Sunday School, helped lead worship, and was active in the life of his home congregation.
Pastor Paul completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education at the University of Northern Iowa. Through his seven years on campus as a student, he was always involved in campus ministry and even completed a 150-hour internship in campus ministry at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. His first professional job was as a Hall Director at Texas Lutheran University, followed by three years as an Academic Advisor at the University of Northern Iowa.
Pastor Paul married Pastor Melissa in 2009; through their marriage they have three children. Pastor Melissa currently serves Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church (De Soto) and First Lutheran Church (Murphysboro). Pastor Paul enjoys conversing with others, reading, brewing beer, gardening, roasting coffee, and line dancing (among other things). Passions in ministry include campus ministry, pastoral care ministry, partnerships with ecumenical and interfaith partners, and creative writing.
